Radioactive Fluorescent Minerals

Beta Particles

Uraninite, Autunite, Uranium Glass

Most fluorescent minerals are not radioactive, but some uranium and thorium containing minerals are both slightly radioactive and fluorescent.

Uraninite, autunite - Ruggles Mine, Grafton, NH, 10 seconds at about 1 inch from Geiger counter beta slots

This 10 second sample ( above ) of clicks recorded from the Geiger counter with the beta slots facing the uraninite with autunite at about one inch shows around 39 counts / 10 sec. or 234 counts / minute.

Uranium glass stopper about 1 inch from Geiger counter beta slots (Uranium glass contains 1% - 2% uranium oxide) Uranium glass stopper (longwave UV)

Uranium glass stopper 10 seconds at about 1 inch from Geiger counter beta slots

This 10 second sample ( above ) of clicks recorded from the Geiger counter with the beta slots facing the uranium glass at about one inch shows around 34 counts / 10 sec. or 204 counts / minute.
